U17s Defeat Steel, 10-5 in First USHL Game

The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the defending Clark Cup Champion, Chicago Steel Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena, 10-5.

Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored twice and Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) tallied a hat trick in the U17s first USHL win.

The Steel opened scoring early in the U17s first USHL regular season game. They put the puck in the back of the net at 4:34 before the U17s scored three unanswered goals to finish the opening period up, 3-1.

Drew Helleson (Farmington, Minn.) tallied the U17s first goal at 8:07, taking a drop pass in the slot from Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) and sending the puck into the net.

Gildon scored consecutive goals at 9:37 and 18:31 of the first period.

Gildon sent the puck in after Steel goaltender Justin Robbins tried clearing the puck. He tallied his second, putting the puck in the net on a cross-ice pass from Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.). Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) also picked up an assist on the goal.

Both teams scored four times in the second period.

Caufield scored his first after tipping in Case McCarthy’s (Clarence Center, N.Y.) shot at 1:54 of the middle frame to put the U17s up 4-1.

Chicago then scored three unanswered goals before Caulfield cleaned up his own rebound and tallied his first goal of the USHL season.

Cole Caufield added a shorthanded goal, and his second of the game, at 13:51 of the second to break the 5-5 tie.

Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) added another for the U17s at 18:17 with an assist from McCarthy.

Mathew Boldy (Millis, Mass.), John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.), added goals for Team USA in the third period. Gildon added a goal at 16:36 of the third to tally his first USHL hat trick and seal the game 10-5.

U17 goaltenders, Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) and Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) combined for 23 saves in the win.

The U17s are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 14 when it travels to New Hope, Minn. to play the Minnesota Elite League.
