U17s Defeat Canada Red in Shootout

Jack Hughes picked up three points and shootout-winner

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. -  The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated Canada Red tonight (Oct. 31) in a shootout in its pre-tournament game at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Canada Red got off to a quick start with a 2-0 lead at the 8:11 mark of the first period.

The U.S. answered back with three goals. Sasha Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) started things off sending the puck into the net from the slot at the 8:39 mark.

Luke Hughes (Manchester, N.H.) sent in a shot from the point, on the power play, and Ty Gallagher (Clarkston, Mich.) tipped it past Canada Red’s Jacob Goobie to tie the game at two. Jack Hughes (Westwood, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the play.

Dylan Duke (Strongsville, Ohio) gave the U17s a short lead at 13:12 with a turn-around shot. Jacob Martin (Eagle River, Wis.) picked up the lone assist on the play.

Canada Red turned around and evened the game at the 17:43 mark of the first.

Chaz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) backhanded the puck to an open Gallagher who sent the puck to the back of the net one a one-timer to give the U.S. a 4-3 lead.

Lucius netted his 15th goal of the year at 11:43 of the second period sending a one-time in over the blocker of Goobie. Jack Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) tallied the assist.

Canada Red netted two before the end of the frame to keep tie the game heading into the third period.

Canada Red took a 6-5 lead while on the power play at 3:17 of the third period.

Duke tallied his second of the game, burying a rebound at 9:10 of the third period to tie the game once again. Pastujov collected the primary assist while Jack Hughes picked up his third point of the game with the secondary.

After a scoreless overtime period, Jack Hughes won it for the U.S. in the shootout while Duke also scored and Kaidan Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) made three saves in the shootout

The U.S. starts preliminary tournament play on Sunday (Nov.3) against the Czech Republic at 3 p.m. MT/5 p.m. ET.
