The USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s seventh man, Rushmore, is an integral member of the NTDP. Rush’s primary function is getting the crowds pumped for home games at USA Hockey Arena and representing the organization in the community.

Rushmore first soared into the NTDP during the 2014 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the original home of the National Team Development Program. Looking for refuge from the blustery Michigan winter on his cross-country journey to only he knows where, he escaped the snow and wind by entering the friendly confines of the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Upon his arrival, he curiously ventured to the concession stand in search of sustenance, but the roaring cheer of “U-S-A, U-S-A!” drew him away from his intended target.

Peering through the viewing area into the NHL-sized rink, he was mesmerized by fans chanting and clapping, some fans even had their faces painted red, white and blue, and on the ice, the U.S. battled against one of their international rivals -- Russia. Wings and beak pressed against the glass, Rushmore watched the entire game.

Building a temporary nest out of broken sticks and old hockey jerseys, Rush camped out underneath the stands for the night and awakened the next day as preparations for more games commenced. He observed as flags were hung, skates were sharpened and anthems were sung. He sat in the stands during the USA-Switzerland game, waving an American flag and jumping to his feet each time the U.S. notched a goal.

Of course, Rushmore needed to see how the tournament ended, so he stuck around for the rest of the event.

Fans noticed him. Players noticed him. Team officials noticed him.

On the final day of the tournament, the National Team Development Program extended him an offer to become part of the team. Rushmore was elated! He was now apart of something.

Today, Rush is an important member of the organization, interfacing year-round with the community and fans.
