 USA VS. FINLAND

The U.S. National Under-18 Team squares off against Finland in its second game of the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament at 10:30 a.m. ET in Sochi, Russia.

The NTDP's 2001 birth-year group suffered its first defeat on the international stage in its Five Nations opener with a 7-5 loss to Sweden. The current U18s posted a spotless record through their first four international events — Fall Under-18 Five Nations Cup, Under-17 Five Nations, Under-17 Four Nations and the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Five players recorded goals for Team USA in its loss to Sweden, including third-period tallies from Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.). However, the Swedes equalized with four minutes to play and scored the eventual game-winner on a 5-on-3 advantage in the final minute of regulation.

Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.), Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) and Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) scored the first three goals for the U18s.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team last faced Finland at the Under-18 Five Nations Cup in Kravaře, Czech Republic. Team USA secured a 3-2 win to capture first place at the event.

Finland dropped a 6-3 decision to the Czech Republic in its opening matchup at the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.

The Finns trailed by just one goal after 20 minutes, but allowed three unanswered tallies over the final two periods. Michal Teply delivered a hat trick for the Czechs, while Adam Rask scored a pair of goals.

Finland entered the tournament after a second-place finish at the Five Nations Cup in Kravaře. The Finns compiled a 3-0-0 (W-L-OTL) record through preliminary-round play before they fell to Team USA in the first-place matchup.

Patrik Puistola (4-1-5), Antti Tuomisto (0-5-5) and Tuukka Tieksola (0-5-5) paced the Finns with five points apiece at the event. NHL's Central Scouting Bureau slotted Tuomisto at No. 15 in its midterm rankings of European skaters. Puistola is ranked No. 28.

Finnish goaltender Roope Taponen led all netminders with a .931 save percentage. Taponen is ranked as the No. 7 European goaltender by Central Scouting.

LAST YEAR ...

The U.S. National Under-18 Team earned first-place finishes at both Five Nations Tournaments, held in Hämeenlinna, Finland, and Plymouth, Michigan, respectively.

Despite a regulation loss to Sweden and shootout losses to Switzerland and Finland, the U18s claimed a tie for first place after a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in their final game of the tournament in Finland.

Last year's group of U18s went on to capture the Five Nations title for a second time on home ice in February 2018 at USA Hockey Arena. Team USA defeated Sweden (5-1) and Russia (5-4) before it secured a 4-0 victory over Finland to seal the first-place finish. Team captain and current Buffalo Sabres prospect Mattias Samuelsson accepted the trophy for the U18s.
