TRANÅS, Sweden - The U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to Russia, 3-1, in its second game of the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Stiga Arena.

"Our effort to compete was very strong again today," U.S. National Under-17 Team head coach Seth Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) said. "We took too many penalties and then expended too much energy killing them. Credit to the Russian goaltender, he was outstanding."

Through the first frame, neither team could gain advantage despite multiple chances, including a shot that rung off the goal post from Jake Sanderson (Whitefish, Mont.) with 4:10 remaining in the period.

Team USA goaltender Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) stood tall in net to keep the game scoreless, and the U17s outshot Russia by a margin of 14-10 after twenty minutes of play.

Russia opened scoring at 5:58 of the middle frame. Daniil Avershin sent the puck toward the front of the net, which deflected off of a Team USA player and into the net.

With 5:19 remaining in the second period, the U17s tied the game on the power play. Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) set up Sanderson at the point, who sent a slapshot past Russian netminder Maxim Motorygin. Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.) also recorded an assist on the goal.

At 7:37 of the third period, Russian forward Yeremy Shumilin sent a shot from the top of the circle past Commesso’s glove-side to regain Russia’s one-goal lead.

Russia scored an empty-net goal with 1:24 remaining to seal its 3-1 victory.

Commesso stopped 22 of 25 shots on goal in the loss.

The U17’s third game of Five Nations against the Czech Republic is slated for Friday (Feb. 8) at 12 p.m. ET at Stiga Arena.

NOTES: Team USA went 1-for-6 on the power play and 11-for-11 on the penalty kill… Team USA outshot Russia 37-25… Jake Sanderson earned Player of the Game for Team USA.
