Five Nations Notebook: U18s open against Sweden; U17s face Russia

Under-17 Five Nations Game 2

The U.S. National Under-17 Team faces off against Russia in its second game of the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament at 9:30 a.m. ET in Tranås, Sweden.

The U17s earned their  first victory of the tournament with a 7-0 win over Finland on Tuesday afternoon.

Russia's National Under-17 Team topped the Czech Republic by a 4-1 final in its first game of the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.

Under-18 Five Nations Game 1

The U.S. National Under-18 Team faces off against Sweden in its first game of the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament at 7 a.m. ET in Sochi, Russia.

The NTDP's 2001 birth-year group aims to continue its undefeated international record after the U18s finished first at the Fall Under-18 Five Nations Cup, Under-17 Five Nations, Under-17 Four Nations and the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Sweden dropped a 3-0 decision to Russia in its opening game of the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.

U17 — USA VS. RUSSIA

The U.S. National Under-17 Team earned its first victory at the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament with a 7-0 win over Finland on Tuesday afternoon.

A pair of goals each from Tanner Latsch (Twin Lake, Mich.) and Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas), along with a 22-save shutout from Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) powered the U17s in the win, which marked their fifth victory on the international stage during the 2018-19 season.

Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.) opened scoring for the U17s when he buried a centering feed off an aggressive forecheck from Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.). Peterson's team-leading 11th international point of the season came at the 3 minute, 59 second mark of the first period.

Bordeleau doubled Team USA's lead at 4:14 of the second frame after he corralled a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it past Finnish goaltender Max Värynen.

Jacob Truscott (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) extended the U17s' lead to 3-0 when he set up in space at the right circle and delivered a one-timer for his second goal of the international campaign.

Third-period tallies from Latsch (2), Bordeleau and Smilanic widened the lead for Team USA and Commesso stopped all four shots in the final frame to complete his second shutout of the season.

Russia's National Under-17 Team topped the Czech Republic in its first game of the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.

Russia, whose U17 group captured first place at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and 2018 Under-17 Four Nations Cup, trailed 1-0 before it scored four unanswered goals to secure the win.

Artyom Udot's power-play tally at the midway mark of the second period proved to be the game-winner. Daniil Avershin, Alexandr Lyubchich and Dmitri Ovchinnikov also recorded goals for Russia, while Yegor Guskov made 25 saves in net.

U18 — USA VS. SWEDEN

The U.S. National Under-18 Team faces off against Sweden in its first game of the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament at 7 a.m. ET in Sochi, Russia.

The NTDP's 2001 birth-year group aims to continue its undefeated international record after the U18s finished first at the Fall Under-18 Five Nations Cup, Under-17 Five Nations, Under-17 Four Nations and the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

At their most recent international competition, the U18s compiled a spotless 4-0 mark at the Under-18 Five Nations Cup in Kravaře, Czech Republic. Team USA collected wins over Sweden (8-2), Czech Republic (5-2) and Switzerland (8-1) in the preliminary round before a 3-2 win in the first-place matchup against Finland.

Team USA accounted for the top three individual scorers at the Five Nations Cup in Kravaře. Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) led all scorers with 16 points (6-10-16), followed by Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) with nine points (7-2-9) and Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) with nine points (4-5-9).

Caufield holds a team-best 33 goals and sits alone in second on the NTDP's all-time goals leaderboard behind former NTDP standout Phil Kessel (2003-05).

Sweden dropped a 3-0 decision to Russia in its opening game of the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.

The Swedes managed to keep Russia off the board through 20 minutes, but allowed a pair of goals in the second to fall behind. Russia's Vasily Podkolzin added an empty-net tally to seal the the win for the host nation.

Sweden entered the tournament after a fourth-place finish at the Five Nations Cup in Kravaře, Czech Republic. Sweden compiled a 1-2-0 (W-L-OTL) record throughout the preliminary round before it suffered a 4-2 defeat against the Czech Republic in the third-place matchup.

Arvid Costmar, ranked as the No. 75 European skater by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau, scored a team-high eight points (4-4-8) for Sweden throughout the tournament.

Sweden's National Under-18 Team is led by Tobias Björnfot, who is ranked as the No. 8 European skater by Central Scouting.

Defenseman Philip Broberg, ranked No. 3 among European skaters, did travel with Sweden to the 2019 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.
