U17s top Central Illinois in shootout

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.), Jacob Sanderson (Whitefish, Mont.), Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.), Brett Berard (E. Greenwich, R.I.), and Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) scored in Team USA’s 5-4 shootout win against the Central Illinois Flying Aces on Jan. 12 at USA Hockey Arena.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team’s record improves to 13-14-2-2, and Team USA’s overall record in USHL play is now 12-11-1-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL). Central Illinois’ record is now 15-15-2-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL).

Team USA goaltender Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) made 13 saves throughout the first frame, including a stop at 9:16 of the period when Flying Aces forward Cal Kiefiuk sent a slapshot from the left circle.

However, the Flying Aces struck first with 5:16 remaining in the first period. NTDP alumni Trevor Janicke sent the puck past Commesso on the power play, with assists from Philippe Lapointe and Ryan Siedem, giving his team a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The U17s tied the game at one, 6:08 into the second period. Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) intercepted a pass in the offensive zone, setting up Powell, who sent the puck past Ryan Snowden’s glove-side

Central Illinois regained a one-goal lead with 9:35 to go in the second period when Justin Dunlap tipped Chase Foley’s shot from the point.  

The U17s outshot Central Illinois 14-13 in the second period and trailed 2-1 after two.

Team USA tied the game 2-2 with 8:23 remaining in the third period. Sanderson scored a power play goal, sending the puck top shelf from the left circle. Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.) and Commesso tallied assists.

With 6:03 to go, Beniers tipped Sanderson’s shot from the point to give the U17s a 3-2 lead. Tuch also tallied an assist.

The U17s extended its lead to 4-2 with 2:25 left in the third with a goal from Berard, who tipped Tuch’s shot past Snowden.  

Central Illinois forward Lynden Breen cut the U17s lead to 4-3 with 46 seconds to go, and Ryan Siedem made it a tie game with one second remaining in the period, sending the game into overtime.

The U17s outshot the Flying Aces 7-1 throughout the five-minute overtime, but the game was ultimately decided in a shootout.

Bordeleau scored the lone goal of the shootout, securing Team USA’s 5-4 victory against the Flying Aces.

Commesso made 28 saves in net for the U17s.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team faces off next on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19, for a two-game series against the Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center. The U17s will return to USA Hockey Arena on Monday, Jan. 21, for a 2 p.m. ET matchup against the Chicago Steel.
