Commesso collects shutout, as the U17s ground Flying Aces

U17s face Flying Aces again Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass) earned Team USA’s first shutout since April 2018, and Owen Gallatin (Hugo, Minn) scored the game-winning goal as the U.S. National Under-17 Team downed the Central Illinois Flying Aces by a 1-0 final Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.

The U17s improved their overall record to 12-14-2-2-0 and Team USA’s USHL record improved to 10-11-1-2.

 

Commesso saved 23 shots on goal and Gallatin tally marked his first as a member of the NTDP in the victory.

Highlights

Team USA dominated puck possession in the opening frame and outshot the Flying Aces by a 14-6 margin.

The game remained scoreless through the second as Commesso stood tall in net and stopped all 11 shots on net in the middle period.

Gallatin broke the scoreless tie with his first goal of the season at the 14 minute, 41 second mark of the final frame. Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif) earned an assist on the play.

The U17s return to action Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET when they take on Central Illinois for round two. The U.S. National Under-18 Team also faces the University of Wisconsin on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. ET at the Kohl Center.

NOTES: Team USA outshot Central Illinois 25-23 ...Team USA went 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill … Dylan Peterson earned Hardest Worker of the Game … Owen Gallatin earned the No. 2 Star of the Game … Drew Commesso earned the No. 1 Star of the Game.

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Owen Gallatin (Hugo, Minn.) scores lone goal, Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) stopped 23 shots on net, giving the U17s their first shutout of the year.

The U17’s overall record is now 12-14-2-2, and Team USA’s USHL record is 11-11-1-2.

Commesso stopped 23 shots, including one sequence late in the game to preserve a scoreless tie. The U17s' goaltender posted its first shutout since April 21, 2018 when they went against Chicago in Game 1 of the EC Semi-Finals.  

Gallatin get's first goal of the season, giving Team USA a 1-0 victory over Central Illinois.

Highlights

After the first frame of play, neither Team USA or Central Illinois scored a goal. The U17s dominated in the offensive zone, out shooting the Aces 14-6. On the other end of the ice, the defense successfully killed off two penalties.  

At the end of the second period, the score remained locked at zeros. Commesso stood tall, saving all 10 shots produced in the middle frame.  

Gallatin was the hero of the night, scoring the game winning goal with 5:19 left in the third period. With the assist from Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.), this gave Gallatin his first goal of the season.

The U.S. Under-17 Team face the Flying Aces again tomorrow night, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena for Jurassic Night. The U.S. Under-18 Team also play tomorrow night, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. ET against the University of Wisconsin at the Kohl Center to wrap up its NCAA schedule.
