PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) netted two goals in the U.S. National Under-17 Team’s 5-4 shootout victory against the Tri-City Storm on Thursday night at USA Hockey Arena.

Team USA and Tri-City exchanged multiple scoring opportunities throughout the first frame, with shots tied at five apiece.

The Storm got on the board first with less than 10 seconds in the frame to gain a one-goal lead entering the first intermission.

Highlights

Bordeleau evened the score with a shorthanded goal off a feed from Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.). 

Bordeleau converted again 7:53 into the middle stanza off a centering feed in the slot from Tanner Latsch (Twin Lake, Mich.)

Team USA took a 3-1 lead 8:46 into the second after Tri-City turned the puck over to Luke Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), who fired a wrist shot past goaltender Isaiah Saville.

The Storm pulled within one of Team USA with 6:41 remaining in the second and tied it with less than one minute to play in the period. The game entered the final 20 minutes knotted at 3-3.

Tri-City took the lead 1:54 into the final frame off a one-timer.

Hunter Strand (Anchorage, Alaska) leveled the score for the third time with 7:39 remaining when he intercepted a centering pass from Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas) and split two Tri-City defenders to score.

A scoreless overtime resulted in a shootout, with Team USA goals from Bordeleau and Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) to seal the win.

Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) made stopped 29 of 33 shots in his first USHL victory.

The U17s return to action Friday (Jan. 4) when they face the Tri-City Storm again at USA Hockey Arena.

NOTES: Team USA was outshot 33-27, went 0-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
