U18s Fall to North Dakota, 6-2

Boldy and Turcotte net goals in loss

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) and Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) each scored, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team ultimately fell to the University of North Dakota 6-2 Saturday night at The Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The U18s record is now 20-8-2-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) and 6-6-1 (W-L-OTL) against college opponents this season.

The Fighting Hawks got on the board first with a power-play goal 3:14 into the frame. Team USA went on the power play around the 14-minute mark, taking control of the puck in the offensive zone, but was unable to even the score.

With 5:29 to go in the period, North Dakota tallied a rebound goal, causing a U.S. two-goal deficit entering the first intermission.

Boldy placed the U18s within one goal of the Fighting Hawks early in the second period on a breakaway. The play began when he intercepted the puck in the defensive zone, skated it down the slot, and slid a backhanded shot five-hole 1:31 into the frame.

North Dakota scored off a high crossbar shot with 10:38 on the clock before NTDP Alum Grant Mismash (2015-17) increased the lead to 4-1 on the power play with 7:56 remaining in the period.

Team USA looked to close the gap in the final minute on the power play with a scoring opportunity from Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.), but suffered a 4-1 score in favor of North Dakota entering the second intermission.

Team USA maintained pressure in the offensive zone throughout the first nine minutes of the third period, outshooting the Fighting Hawks 12-3.

With 10:15 on the clock North Dakota extended their lead with a quick one-timer in the slot, before Turcotte redirected a Boldy shot at the net, making it 5-2 with 9:21 remaining.

NTDP Alum Gavin Hain (2017-18) sealed North Dakota’s victory with an empty-netter at 3:44 left.

University of North Dakota commit Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) stopped 28 of 34 shots on goal in the loss.

NOTES: Team USA went 1-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill ... Team USA and North Dakota tied for shots on goal, 34-34.
