U18s Fall Short to Lake Superior State University, 7-3

U18s return to action Wednesday (Dec. 19) vs Muskegon at USA Hockey Arena

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Marshall Warren (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.), Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) all scored a goal in Team USA's 7-3 loss to Lake Superior State University on Sunday afternoon at USA Hockey Arena. 

The U18s overall record falls to 18-7-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and its record in NCAA play is now 5-6-0 (W-L-T).

Highlights

Lake Superior State University’s left winger Max Humitz got its team on the scoreboard first with 9:22 left in the opening frame. The play began when forward Diego Cuglietta passed it back to defenseman Collin Saccoman, who took a one-timer slap shot that was tipped in by Humitz.

Team USA kept the pressure on LSSU, producing 8 shots on net, but was unable to get a goal to tie it up at the end of the first period.

The U18s answered with a goal to tie the game 6:14 into the second period. Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.) passed the puck across the net, bouncing off the boards before Warren took a one-timer slap shot, going 5-hole on Lake Super State’s goaltender Gage Torrel.

Saccoman extended Lake Superior's lead to  3-1 with two back-to-back goals spanning from 9:42-7:39 left in the second stanza.

Shortly after, Team USA found their second goal of the game with 6:13 left in the middle frame when Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) found Rolston in front of the net who was able to tuck it away.

LSSU responded when center Cuglietta went on a breakaway, ripping a slap shot over the left-hand glove of Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) to close the second period scoring with 5:35 left in the second period.

Ian Johnston gave LSSU its fifth goal with 8:12 to go in the game when Cuglietta made a centering pass to Johnston, sending a low shot into the back of the net.

Leading Team USA with 22 goals, Caufield answered back, scoring with 9:22 left on the clock with the assist from Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) and Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.).

Cuglietta scored his second goal of the game on an empty net at 2:24 left before Tyler Anderson scored with 24 seconds left, accounting for the 7-3 final.

The U18s resume its USHL schedule on Wednesday morning, Dec. 19 at 10:30 a.m. ET when it takes on the Muskegon Lumberjacks at USA Hockey Arena. After seven days off from play, Team USA will continue action against NCAA team St. Cloud State University on Dec. 27 at 7:00 p.m. ET at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
