U18s defeat University of Maine, 6-4

Five players tally goals in victory; U18s face Michigan State next Saturday (Dec. 15)

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) tallied his 20th and 21st goals of the season in Team USA’s 6-4 victory over the University of Maine Black Bears at USA Hockey Arena on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The U18s combined record improves to 18-5-2-0, and its record in NCAA play is now 5-4-0 (W-L-T).

Team USA struck first at 5:37 in to the first period when Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.) scored on a slapshot from the point off of a pass from Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.). The goal set off the Teddy Bear Toss

The U18s maintained a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes of play and led the Black Bears in shots, 13-12.

Highlights

Team USA opened the second period scoring 22 seconds in when McCarthy passed the puck deep to Caufield who sent it past Maine goaltender Rob McGovern’s glove side.

Sam Becker scored at 17:03 to put the Black Bears on the board. Caufield responded with his second of the game at 15:50 of the second period, capitalizing on a rebound from a Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) shot in the slot, giving Team USA a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

At 18:03 of the final frame Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.)  sent the puck top corner off of a pass from Domenick Fensore (Thornwood, N.Y.). At 17:58 of the third, Eduards Tralmaks scored Maine’s second goal.

Jack Hughes gave Team USA a 5-2 lead at 17:14, scoring off of a rebound from Marshall Warren’s (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) shot at the top of the left circle.

Maine responded with two goals to bring the game within one when Alexis Binner scored with 9:14 to- go and Jack Quinlivan scored with 8:43 remaining in the game.

Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.) scored with 6:33 left in the third period, slipping the puck past Stephen Mundinger off of an assist from Warren and sealing the U18s 6-4 victory.

Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) played a full game in net and made 37 saves. 

The U18s return to action on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. ET when it takes on Michigan State University at Munn Ice Arena, and resume play at home on Dec. 16 against Lake Superior State University.
