PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Despite erasing a three-goal deficit, the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell in overtime, 5-4, to the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.
After Youngstown tallied a trio of second-period goals to open up a 3-0 lead, Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) ignited the comeback for Team USA when he found the back of the net 22 seconds before the break. The goal marked Rolston's eighth of the season. Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) and Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) collected assists.
In an eventful third period, Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the go-ahead tally, and Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.) added another as the U18s took their first lead of the game with 2:27 to play.
Thrun's second of the game, a one-timer from the right circle, marked his fourth goal of the season, which leads all U18 defensemen.
However, Youngstown responded when Trevor Kuntar tied the game at the 18:59 mark of the third. Joey Abate scored the overtime winner.
Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) made 20 saves in the loss.
The U18s return to the ice Saturday (Dec. 8) when they resume their NCAA slate against the University of Maine. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena and the game will be broadcast via HockeyTV.com.
