U18s Fall to Bowling Green 5-4

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) netted two goals for the U.S. National Under-18 Team in its loss to Bowling Green State University on Wednesday evening at USA Hockey Arena.

Bowling Green captured a 1-0 lead in the first period when Stephen Baylis scored on a two-on-one. The U18s and Bowling Green were tied in shots, 14-14, after twenty minutes of play.

The Falcons scored twice in the first half of the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Forward Sam Craggs scored at 18:14 of the period, and Shane Bednard gave Bowling Green a three goal lead two minutes and 48 seconds later. The U18s ended the period with momentum as Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal with 1:18 remaining in the period, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Bowling Green regained a two goal lead to open the third period as Max Johnson scored on a power play at 15:44. Caufield responded 55 seconds later with his first goal of the game, with Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) and Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.) tallying assists.

Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) scored with 5:06 remaining in the third period to put the U18s within one. Lukas Craggs netted Bowling Green’s fifth goal of the game on an empty net with 2:05 to go in the third. Caufield brought the U18s within one with nine seconds remaining, but Team USA ultimately fell 5-4 to Bowling Green.

Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) made 38 saves in the loss.

The U18s travel to Grossinger Motors Arena for an 8:07 p.m. ET matchup on Friday (Nov. 23) against the Central Illinois Flying Aces, and return to USA Hockey Arena on Saturday (Dec. 1) against the Waterloo Black Hawks.
