U17s fall to Chicago Steel, 5-3

PLYMOUTH, Mich. --  Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas.), Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas.), and Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.) scored goals as the U.S.  National Under-17 Team fell to the Chicago Steel by a 5-3 final Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena. 

Chicago opened scoring 14 seconds into the opening period. 

Yoder tied the game 4:40 into the second with assists from Tyler Kleven (Fargo, N.D.) and Owen Gallatin (Hugo, Minn.). The Steel, however, regained the lead and extended it to two goals at the midway mark of the second

Highlights

Bordeleau cut Chicago’s lead half when he powered a snap shot from the left circle into the back of the net at the 5:30 mark of the second. Brock Faber (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up an assist on the play. Smilanic tied the game with 0.5 seconds to play in the period when he finished a 2-on-1 with Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.).  Jacob Truscott (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) also tallied an assist.

Despite a handful of late scoring chances, Team USA could not find the tying goal. Chicago added an empty-net tally in the closing seconds of the game.

Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) stopped 20 of 24 shots in net for Team USA.

The U17s return to action at 7 p.m. ET on Friday (Nov. 30) against the Waterloo Black Hawks at USA Hockey Arena. NOTESTeam USA went 2-for-5 and killed off both penalties it faced ... Team USA was outshot by a 25-19 margin ... Ty Smilanic earned the No. 3 star of the game.
