U17s Fall to Cedar Rapids 4-3

U17s continue play tomorrow (Nov. 17) at USA Hockey Arena at 7 p.m.

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.), Brett Berard (E. Greenwich, R.I.), and Tyler Kleven (Fargo, N.D.) scored in the U.S. National Under-17 Team's 4-3 shootout loss to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at USA Hockey Arena. 

The U17s have a 7-10-0-2 record across all competitions, and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' record improves to 8-5-2-0. The combined Team USA record in USHL play is now 5-5-0-2.

Despite multiple scoring opportunities by Team USA, Cedar Rapids converted at the 4:13 and 16:50 marks of the opening period, entering the first intermission up by two.

Slaggert slipped one past the RoughRiders with 5:19 remaining in the second, to score his sixth goal of the season and cut the RoughRiders’ lead in half. Team USA goaltender Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) stood tall throughout the middle frame, stopping all seven attempts, maintaining the Team USA one-goal deficit.

Game Highlights

Cedar Rapids tallied again six minutes into the final frame before Team USA pulled its goaltender and capitalized on the man advantage with 1:17 to go in the game. The play started when Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) collected the puck and fed it to Berard in the slot, whose shot hit the crossbar and past RoughRiders goaltender Troy Kobryn. Kleven scored to tie the game with 42 seconds remaining with a one-timer off a Bordeleau pass, forcing overtime.

Team USA outshot the RoughRiders 3-1 in the five minute 3-v-3 overtime with no success. 

The RoughRiders came out on top in the shootout, defeating Team USA with a final score of 4-3. Grannan stopped 22 of 25 shots faced. Team USA went 0-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The U17s return to action at USA Hockey Arena tomorrow (Nov. 17) for a 7 p.m. ET start time against the Chicago Steel.
