U17s return to action Friday (Nov. 9) in placement game

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. -- Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.) scored as the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Canada Red in a quarterfinal matchup at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the qplex in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.

"I'm proud of our guys' effort tonight in spite of not getting the result we came for," Seth Appert, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team, said. "Our penalty kill and goaltending did a great job keeping them at bay. As disappointing as it is, we get the opportunity to play for our country tomorrow."

Peterson put Team USA ahead at the 7:19 mark of the first period when he buried a backhand feed from behind the net by Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas). Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.) picked up a secondary assist on the play for his third point of the tournament.

U17s goaltender Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) delivered a plethora of important stops to preserve Team USA's 1-0 lead through the midway mark of the second period, which included a sequence of three saves in a matter of seconds on a rush for Canada Red.

Matthew Maggio tied the game for Canada Red on a power-play goal with 5:28 to play in the second.

Elliot Desnoyers delivered the overtime winner for Canada Red 4:34 into the extra frame.

Commesso stopped 32 of 34 shots in total.

Team USA will return to the ice for a placement game Friday (Nov. 9) at the qplex in Quispamsis vs the Czech Republic at noon AT/ 11 a.m. ET.
