St. Stephen, N.B. -- Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Daniyal Dzhaniyev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to Canada Red, 5-2, in its pre-tournament game opening the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities throughout the opening frame, but neither team was able to gain the advantage.
Canada Red got on the board 1:34 into the second period with a breakaway goal before doubling their lead a minute and a half later. They struck again at 7:56 and 9:37 into the period, taking the lead 4-0.
Powell scored with 2:03 remaining in the middle frame with the help of Brett Berard (E. Greenwich, R.I.) and Jacob Truscott (Fort Gratiot, Mich.), before Canada Red responded soon after, giving them a 5-1 lead entering the second intermission.
Dzhaniyev scored with 6:09 to go off feeds from Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas) and Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.), but Team USA was unable to even the score in the final minutes accounting for the 5-2 final.
The U17s open preliminary play on Sunday (Nov.4) when they take on the Czech Republic at 12:00 p.m. local/11:00 a.m. ET.
