Team USA Tops Dubuque, 8-3

Seven U18s players score for Team USA for a 8-3 win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored twice and Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) made 29 saves in Team USA’s 8-3 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  

With the win, the U18s improves to 10-2-1-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) overall and 4-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) in regular season USHL play.

Defenseman Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.)  netted his second goal of the season on a power play at 1:56 into the first period with assists from Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) and Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.), giving Team USA an early lead. The U18s kept the pressure high, outshooting Dubuque 14-7, with three shots hitting the crossbar, but the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first period.

Team USA found the back of the net twice during the second period. With 5:13 left in the second, Farrell took on two defenders to score an unassisted, short-handed goal, giving the U18s its second goal of the game. Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) ended the period on a goal assisted by Cam York (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) with 1:04 remaining. Rowe kept the Fighting Saints off the board by saving all 10 shots in the second period to preserve the 3-0 lead.

Highlights

Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.) opened the third period with a goal at 3:18, with assists coming from Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) and York. Two minutes and 24 seconds later, Caufield scored off of an assist from Hughes to give Team USA its fifth goal of the game. On a power play and 7:19 into the third, Boldy put one in the back of the net with Zegras tallying an assist.

The Fighting Saints responded with three goals in five minutes. Dubuque scored its first goal at 8:42 from Patrick Smyth, with an assist from Cooper Haar. Willie Knierim scored on the power play, with assists from J.D Greenway and 6:35 remaining. Knierim scored again off of an assist from James Sanchez with 3:26 left in regulation.

Team USA scored two additional goals to end the game. With 2:32 to go, Farrell scored with assists from John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) and McCarthy. Zegras sealed the 8-3 victory over Dubuque with a goal from Boldy in the final minute.
