Team USA defeats Muskegon, 8-3

The U18s end the Lumberjack’s win streak with an 8-3 victory at L.C. Walker Arena

Muskegon, Mich. - Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) tallied four points and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) recorded his second hat trick of the season as Team USA served the Muskegon Lumberjacks its first regular season loss with a 8-3 victory on Saturday Night at L.C. Walker Arena.

With the victory, Team USA improves to 9-2-1-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) overall and 3-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) in regular season USHL play.

Muskegon took an early first period lead as Bobby Lynch connected off of an assist from Hunter Skinner. Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass.) netted the first U18s goal at 9:14 from the point off of assists from Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) and John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.). The Lumberjacks took the lead again with a goal from Owen Farris with 8:53 remaining. 2:31 later, Caufield scored unassisted to end the period with a 2-2 tie.

Team USA scored three goals to pull away with a 5-3 lead after two periods of play. Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) struck first in the second frame to put the U18s ahead, with Zegras and Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) tallying assists. Muskegon responded 30 seconds later to tie the game at three. The U18s went on to score two unanswered goals to end the period, as Caufield netted his second goal and Zegras scored at 17:47 to record his third point of the game.

Seventeen seconds into the third period, John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) put the U18s ahead by three, with assists from Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas). Caufield scored his third of the game on an empty net to extend Team USA's lead to four. Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) sealed the 8-3 victory with a goal at 18:46.

Knight recorded 30 saves for Team USA to remain unbeaten and earn his seventh win of the season overall and second in USHL play.

The U18s return to USA Hockey Arena tomorrow (Oct. 28) for a 2 p.m. ET matchup against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. 

Tomorrow's matchup will feature decreased audio and visual presentation as USA Hockey hosts its first Sensory Friendly Day.
