Slaggert Paces U17s Past Capitols in Home Opener, U17s Top Madison 4-2

Notre Dame commit tallies three points in victory

PLYMOUTH Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) recorded one goal and two assists for Team USA as the U.S. National Under-17 Team earned a 4-2 victory against the Madison Capitols in its home opener Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.

The U17s are 4-1-0-0. Madison is now 2-3-0-1. The combined Team USA  record in USHL play is now 3-0-0-0 to start the season.

Slaggert, a University of Notre Dame commit, recorded assists on both first period goals.

Tanner Latsch (Twin Lake, Mich.) sent the puck top corner of the net to give the U17s a 1-0 lead at 5:43 of the opening frame. Slaggert drew an assist on the goal.  

Team USA jumped to a 2-0 lead when Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) recorded his first goal of the season on the power play with 6:53 remaining in the first period. Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) and Slaggert assisted on the goal.

Highlights

The Capitols scored to open the second period at 2:05. Kristoff Papp capitalized on an assist from Sam Miller and Chaz Smedsrud to cut the U17s lead in half.

The U17s responded at 9:17 in the second period to extend the lead to 3-1, as Slaggert recorded his first goal of the season and third point of the game on the tally. Slaggert’s goal was assisted by Berniers and Daniel Laatsch (Altoona, Wis.).

Madison netted its second goal with 1:05 remaining in the third period. Carson Bantle netted the goal with assists from Miller and Smedsrud, cutting the U17s lead to 3-2.

Team USA held off the Capitols in the final minute of regulation. Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texasscored an empty net goal off an assist from Luke Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) to seal the 4-2 home opener victory.

Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) played a full game in net for the U17s, stopping 26 of 28 shots in 59:49 minutes of play.

The U17s will host the Madison Capitols for a second time at USA Hockey Arena tomorrow, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for this game and all Team USA games at USAHockeyNTDP.com/Tix.
