CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Domenick Fensore (Thornwood, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 10.9 seconds left as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Omaha Lancers, 2-1, on Sunday at the 2018 Dick's Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic.
The game was played at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, the practice facility of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.
The U18s improve to 4-0-0 overall this season. Team USA is 2-0-0 in the USHL competition.
Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored the other U18 goal. Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) added two assists.
The U18s outshot Omaha, 10-4, in the first stanza.
Caulfield scored the only goal of the first period on a U18 power play at 9:47. Hughes set up the play with a strong pass from the right circle in the Omaha zone to Caufield at the left dot. Caufield made no mistake with the shot for his third goal of the year. John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) drew the secondary assist.
Tyler Carpenter tied the game in the second period for Omaha, picking up a loose puck outside the Team USA blue ice to score an unassisted goal at 8:17.
The U18s outshot Omaha, 13-8, in the second period.
Fensore's game winning goal came off a scrum deep in the Omaha zone. Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) dug the puck free and found Hughes at the right circle. Hughes fed across to Fensore, who scored from the left circle.
Team USA outshot Omaha, 36-16, in the game. Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) stopped 15-of-16 shots in goal for the U18s.
The U18s play at Ferris State University next Saturday, Oct. 6 at 5:07 pm ET in its next game.
