Luke Tuch nets two goals in victory

BLAINE, Minn. -- Luke Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored the game-tying goal late in the third period and the overtime winner as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, 4-3, to conclude its preseason slate Saturday night at the NAHL Showcase at Schwan Super Rink.

Team USA jumped on the board midway through the opening period when Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) rushed through the left side and tallied a short-handed goal, marking his first of the preseason. Brett Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Connor Kelley (Maple Grove, Minn.) were credited with assists.

After Wilkes-Barre/Scranton evened the score in the final seconds of the first, Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) helped Team USA regain the lead after he finished a centering pass from Berard at 13:42 of the second.

The Knights briefly gained a 3-2 advantage in the final stanza before Tuch’s late tally with an extra attacker forced overtime.

Tuch followed up his equalizer with the game-winning goal six seconds into the extra frame after a strong feed from Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas).

Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) started in net and stopped 12 of 13 shots before being replaced by Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.), who made 11 saves in 13 attempts.

Team USA will return to the ice at 7 p.m. EST Oct. 5 when it opens USHL play against the Madison Capitols at USA Hockey Arena. Single game, group tickets, season tickets or $5 Friday value tickets for all NTDP games are available by calling 734-453-6400 or by visiting USAHockeyNTDP.com/Tickets.
