U18s Down Muskegon 6-3 in Season Opener

Six score first goals of season in USHL preseason matchup

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team utilized six different goal scorers in defeating the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 6-3, in a United States Hockey League pre-season game played Wednesday at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon.

The NTDP U18s are 1-0-0-0.  Muskegon is now 2-1-0-0. 

Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.), Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.), Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.), Danny Weight (Lattingtown N.Y.), Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) all scored single goals for the U18s. Cam York (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) recorded two assists.

The U18s scored twice in the first period and hit the cross-bar with another attempt in outshooting Muskegon, 13-8.

Box Score

Caufield (54 goals last year) started the scoring on the U18s power play, rifling a shot from the left circle past Muskegon goaltender Brandon Bussi at 6:07. Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) and York drew assists on the goal.

Boldy (U17s leading scorer last season with 29 goals and 47 assists for 76) tucked a hard shot from the high slot under the crossbar at 12:53 to give the U18s a 2-0 lead. Later in the period, Boldy rang a shot off the crossbar.

Turcotte gave the U18s a 3-0 lead at 4:56 of the second period, stuffing a shot through traffic at the right post of the Muskegon goal. Weight scored at 10:29 to increase the U18s lead to 4-1, converting Sean Farrell's (Hopkinton, Mass.) pass from the left goal line in the Muskegon zone and snapping the shot from the hashmarks through traffic.

Muskegon's Daniil Gushchin scored the lone Lumberjacks goal of the period, at 11:04, converting a centering pass by Bobby Lynch in front of Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.). But McCarthy came back for the U18s on a power play at 14:42, rifling a shot under the crossbar to give the U18s a 5-1 lead after forty minutes.

Caulfield sandwiched his goal in the third period around Muskegon markers from Nolan Sullivan and Alex Gaffney to close the scoring.

In goal, Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) started for the U18s and stopped all 14 shots he faced in 30:29. Rowe went the rest of the way stopping 12 of 15 shots in 29:31.

The U18s outshot Muskegon, 40-29.

The U18s play the Lumberjacks in their next game, Saturday, Sept. 22, as they return to L.C. Walker Arena.
