U17s Fall to Youngstown, 7-5 in Game 3

The Phantoms lead Eastern Conference Final series, 2-1

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - Five different players scored for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program Under-17 Team in a 7-5 loss against the Youngstown Phantoms in Game 3 of the United States Hockey League’s Clark Cup Eastern Conference Finals Friday at Covelli Centre.

The series resumes with Game 4 on Saturday at 7 pm at Covelli Centre. 

Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass.), Erik Middendorf (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.), Danny Weight (Lattingtown, N.Y.) and Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) scored for the U17s.

Youngstown opened the scoring at 5:39 of the first period when Mike Regush won a faceoff in the Team USA zone and found Jason Smallidge at the right point, who scored his second goal of the playoffs.  Just 1:16 later Chase Gresock scored on a shot from the right circle to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead at 6:55.

The U17s cut the deficit in half at 14:15 on the power play. Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.)-stationed at the top of the left circle - found Thrun at the mid-point of the blue.  Thrun threaded a shot through traffic for his second goal of the playoffs and second power play goal as in many games.

But Youngstown got it back 0:24 later when Gresock picked off a loose puck behind the Team USA, moved out in front and beat U17 goaltender Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) at 14:39.

The teams traded a pair of goals aside in the second period.

Gresock recorded his third goal of the game at 1:09 of the second period, scoring from the left circle to give Youngstown a 4-1 lead.

Team USA came back on  Middendorf's fifth goal of the playoffs at 6:09, batting home a rebound from the right circle after Phantoms goaltender Ivan Prosvetov made the original stop on Weight.

After Gresock scored his fourth goal of the game on the power play at 9:32 to give the Phantoms a 5-2 lead, Boldy responded for the U17s on the power play at 11:01 with a shot from the right circle to cut the Phantoms lead to 5-3.

Youngstown and Team USA traded two goals each again in the third period.

Jake Gingell threaded a shot through traffic to score for Youngstown at 3:02. With the goaltender pulled, Weight batted home a rebound to cut the Youngstown lead  to 6-4 at 17:37. Tommy Parrottino scored on the empty net for the Phantoms at 19:05 and Lindmark closed the scoring at 19:42.

Youngstown outshot the U17s, 41-26. 

NOTES:  Team USA went 3-8 on the power play while Youngstown went 2-8  … Youngstown outshot Team USA 41-26 ... Team USA won its first ever USHL playoff game in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal on Saturday (April 21) defeating the Chicago Steel, 3-0 ...
