U17s Take 2-1 Series Lead, Defeat Chicago 3-2 in OT

Weight nets OT-winner to give U17s a 2-1 Series lead

GENEVA, Ill. – The U.S. National Under-17 defeated the Chicago Steel, 3-2 in overtime tonight at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Danny Weight (Lattingtown, N.Y.) netted the overtime winner to give Team USA the win. 

Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) skated the puck up the middle and sent a pass to John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) on the right side. Beecher put the puck on his backhand before shooting it forehand past Chicago’s Oskar Autio at the 6:37 mark of the first period.

Chicago tied the game, 1-1 at 9:52 of the second period while on the power play.

Erik Middendorf (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sent the puck into the net with Autio out of position at 6:46 of the third period to give Team USA a 2-1 lead. Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) assisted on the goal.

The Steel tied the game once again at 19:00 of the third period to send the game to overtime.

Box Score

Weight netted the overtime winner shoveling the puck into the net on a rebound at the 2:51 mark of overtime. Drew Helleson (Farmington, Minn.) and Caulfield picked up the assists on the game-winner.

Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) made 33 saves in the win while Chicago’s Autio made 24.

With a 2-1 series lead, the U17s are set for Game 4 tomorrow (April 27) with the Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m. CT. Game 5 will be back at USA Hockey Arena on Sunday (April 29) at 3 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased at USAHockeyNTDP.com/Playoffs.
