U17s Fall to Youngstown, 6-1

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The U.S. National Under-17 Team fell, 6-1, to the Youngstown Phantoms in a USHL game played Saturday afternoon at Covelli Centre in Youngstown.

Team USA is now 38-17-0-1, good for 77 points and in first place in the USHL's Eastern Conference.  Youngstown has points in 11 straight games (9-0-1-1) and improves to 31-18-5-2.

Team USA has clinched first place in the Eastern Conference of the USHL with a league leading 38 wins and 38 wins in ROW (Regulation and Overtime Wins). Team USA still holds a 5-3-0 edge over Youngstown.

USA outshot Youngstown, 9-8, in the first period and scored the only goal of the frame.

Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Erik Middendorf (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won a 20-second two-on-two battle for a loose puck along the left-wing half-wall in the Youngstown zone.  Caulfield found Marshall Warren (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) skating to the hash-marks, who made no mistake with a low shot past Phantoms' goaltender Ivan Prosvetov at 9:32.

Youngstown took the game over in the second period, scoring five unanswered goals while outshooting the U17s, 17-7. Eric Esposito (6:23), Mike Regush (7:15), Nicholas Cardelli (11:16), Jake Gingell (13:50) and Max Ellis (16:48) all scored in the period for Youngstown.

Esposito added his second of the game at 7:39 of the third period.

Youngstown outshot the U17s, 37-32.

The U17s remain on the road in USHL next Friday (April 6) and Saturday (April 7), playing in Dubuque against the Fighting Saints. 

The U17s last home game of the regular season is Friday, April 13 at 7 pm at USA Hockey Arena against Muskegon.
