U18s top Chicago Steel in 5-4 shootout win

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) scored the U18s lone shootout goal against the Chicago Steel for Team USA’s 5-4 shootout win at USA Hockey Arena Friday night.

The U18s now have a 35-14-0-3-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record for the season.

The Steel opened scoring early in the first period after Chicago’s Aaro Vidgren sent the puck top-shelf during a power-play for the first goal of the night.

With 5:42 left in the frame, Todd Goehring scored the Steel’s second goal with a snipe off the faceoff. Another goal at the 3:53 mark from Baker Shore made it a 3-0 game.

Team USA found the net 11:32 into the second period when Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) snuck the puck behind Chicago goaltender Oskar Autio. Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) and Wahlstrom picked up assists on the goal.

Wahlstrom tallied his second point of the night with a clean goal from the doorstep off an assist from K’Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) at 14:44 in the second period to make it 3-2.

Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) picked up a secondary assist on Wahlstrom’s goal and now has 50 USHL points. Hughes is tied for second in single-season assists with 64 and sixth with Matthew Tkachuck for total points in a single season with 95.

Four minutes into the final frame, Chicago’s Jack Dugan picked up his second point of the night to extend the Steel’s lead to two.

At 15:41, Gruden pulled the U18s within one, making it 4-3 after scoring off a pass from Miller. A secondary assist was credited to Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.).

With 21 seconds remaining in the game and an extra attacker on the ice, Jake Wise (Reading, Mass.) connected with Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.), who cleared the puck past Autio for the game-tying goal. Hughes was credited the secondary assist.  

After a scoreless overtime, Wahlstrom netted the lone goal by either team to seal the game.

Chicago outshot Team USA, 44-33.

Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) recorded 40 saves for the win.

The U18s will finish the home series at USA Hockey Arena against Chicago Steel on Saturday, March 24 at 7:05 p.m. ET.

The Team USA jerseys worn this weekend for Military Appreciation Weekend will be auctioned off within the upcoming weeks. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to benefit resources for veterans.
