U18s defeat the Madison Capitols, 5-3

Wahlstrom tallies two goals and an assist

Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy Mass.) scored twice as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Madison Capitols 5-3 on Saturday night at Bob Suter Ice Arena.

With the win, the U18s are 22-13-0-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) overall and 12-2-0-0 in USHL regular season play this year.

After the Capitols opened the scoring, Wahlstrom scored the first U18s goal with 3:27 remaining in the first period. Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) earned an assist.

The two teams were deadlocked at one heading into the first intermission.

Wahlstrom scored his second of the night on a shorthanded goal at the 10:44 mark of the second period. Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis) had the assist.

Two minutes later Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) gave the U18s a 3-1 lead off a helper from Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.).

Jonathan Gruden (Rochester Mich.) extended the U18s lead to 4-2 on the power play at the 15:17 mark of the second frame. Adam Samuelsson (San Diego, Calif.) and Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) added assists on the goal.

The Madison Capitols added a goal midway through the third to bring the game within one, but Farabee sealed the win with a late game empty netter. Wahlstrom and Ty Emberson (Eau Claire, Wis.) added assists on the play.

Drew Deridder (Fenton, Mich.) made 29 saves on the night to improve his record to 15-8-0-1 overall and a perfect 9-0-0-0 in USHL play.
