The U.S National Under-18 Team defeated the Cedar Rapid RoughRiders, 7-6 Friday night at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
With the win the U18s are now 18-12-0-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) overall and 10-2-0-0 in USHL regular season play this year.
Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) opened the scoring 1:19 into the first. Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy Mass.) and Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y) tallied assists on the play.
After two quick goals from the RoughRiders the U18s answered with two of their own. Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J) scored four seconds into a power play at the 4:53 mark. Ty Emberson (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) assisted the goal.
Two minutes later, K’Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) gave the U18s the lead with a shot from the left circle. Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Jake Wise (Reading, Mass.) picked up assists on the goal.
Wahlstrom added a fourth goal between the pads at 13:36 of the first to give the U18s a 4-3 lead into the first intermission. Hughes and Farabee added assists.
Gruden scored 1:59 into the second thanks to assists from Janicke and Wise.
Farabee jammed a shot under the pads to give the U18s a 6-4 lead on a power play at the 10:03 mark of the second period. Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) and Walhstrom tallied assists on the play.
Wahlstrom tallied his second goal of the night and the eventual game winner off a cross-ice pass from Hughes on the power play in the third to give the U18s a 7-5 advantage. Wise also added an assist on the play. The RoughRiders added one more to bring them within one, but the U18s were able to hold off the RoughRiders in the final moments
Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) made 16 saves for Team USA on the night to stay a perfect 8-0-0-0 in USHL play.
The U18s are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Chicago to take on the Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
