U17s Hold Off Central Illinois, Win 6-5

The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Central Illinois Flying Aces in USHL play tonight on the road, 6-5.

Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.) netted his first of the game at 2:09 of the first period, pushing in the rebound out front. Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) and John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) tallied the assists.

Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) extended the U17s lead at 7:33 of the opening frame. He buried the puck on a backhanded pass from Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.). Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the goal.

Skater Leaders

McCarthy netted his second of the game at 16:08 of the first period, sending the puck over Central Illinois’ Ryan Snowden. Domenick Fensore (Thornwood, N.Y.) and Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) added the helpers on the goal.

The Flying Aces netted a goal at 18:57 of the first period to send the U17s to the locker room up, 3-1.

The Flying Aces netted four goals in the second period.

Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored at 11:18 of the second period. He sent the puck in from the right side of the net on a pass from Caulfield and Rolston.

Rolston tallied his second goal of the game, and third point at 8:45 of the third period to tie the game, 5-5.

Danny Weight (Lattingtown, N.Y.) gave Team USA the win with four seconds left in the game, burying a rebound off Caufield’s initial shot.

Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) made 18 saves in the win while Central Illinois’ Snowden stopped 18 shots.

The two teams face-off again tomorrow night at Grossinger Motors Arena. Puck drop is set for 8:07 p.m. ET.
