Miller tallies three points in win

The U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated Ferris State University, 5-1 in its first game of the New Year tonight at USA Hockey Arena.

Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) gave the U18s the lead at 8:07 of the first period, shoveling the puck in from the right side of the net. Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) tallied his second assist of the season with the U18s on the goal.

K’Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) knocked the puck in from the slot at 1:47 of the second period. Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.) and Gavin Hain (Grand Rapids, Minn.).

Skater Leaders

Miller netted his second of the period from the high slot, sending the puck in over Ferris State’s Darren Smith at 15:11 of the second period. Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.) added the assist on the goal.

Miller sent a stretch pass to Hain at center ice, who left the puck for Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.). Giles sent in a wrister from the right circle to put the U18s up, 4-0 heading into the third period.

Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) sent the puck in just under the crossbar on a breakaway 22 seconds into the third period. Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) added the assist on the goal.

Ferris State netted its lone goal at 13:47 of the third period to avoid being shutout.

Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) made 26 saves in the win while the Bulldogs’ Darren Smith made 32 saves.

The U18s are back in action on Jan. 5 as they take on Boston University before returning to USA Hockey Arena on Jan. 7 to host Utica College at 2pm ET. Tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/Tix.
