GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Ryan Savage (Novi, Mich.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) scored for the U.S. National Under-18 Team in a 5-2 loss to the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
With the loss the U18s fall to 14-11-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) on the season and 3-8-0 (W-L-T) against NCAA opponents.
The Fighting Hawks would add three goals early in the third period before Savage opened the scoring for Team USA late in the first period when he gathered a rebound off a Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.) shot and backhanded a shot past Fighting Hawks goaltender Cam Johnson.
The U18s trailed North Dakota 3-1 following the first period.
The Fighting Hawks added another goal early in the second period before Wahlstrom cut the UND lead to 4-2 when he took a pass from Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) in the slot and lifted a backhand shot past Johnson. Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.) also picked up an assist on the play.
North Dakota led 4-2 after two periods of play.
The U18s outshot the Fighting Hawks 12-7 in the final frame and pulled goaltender Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) in favor of the extra attacker with a little under two minutes remaining but were unable to find the back of the net.
NTDP alum Shane Gersich (2013-14/Chaska, Minn.) picked up the empty netter for the Fighting Hawks to bring it to the final score of 5-2.
Grant Mismash, who played for the NTDP from 2015-17, picked up the primary assist on the third UND goal in the first period.
DeRidder made 30 saves while Johnson, Peter Thome and Ryan Anderson combined for 28 saves for North Dakota.
