U18s Fall to Michigan, 7-3 in First Game as Host

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell, 7-3 in front of a sell-out crowd Saturday night, as it hosted the University of Michigan for the first time at USA Hockey Arena.

Michigan started off strong with three goals in the first period.

The Wolverines took a 4-0 lead at 2:26 of the second period before the U18s battled back, scoring three straight.

Skater Leaders

Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) put the U18s on the board at 6:52 of the second period. After skating the puck into the offensive zone, he sent it to the top left corner over the blocker of Michigan’s Hayden Lavigne. Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) and Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) picked up the assists on the goal.

Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.) netted his first goal at 8:42 of the second period off a one-timer from Adam Samuelsson (San Diego, Calif.). Wahlstrom picked up his second point of the game with an assist.

Giles pulled the U18s within one at 16:53 of the second on a turn-around shot after Mattias Samuelsson’s initial shot took a bounce off the end boards. Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.) also added an assist on the goal.

Michigan scored two quick ones in the third period at 4:26 and 4:38 to regain a three-goal lead. NTDP alum Will Lockwood (2014-16) netted the Wolverine’s sixth goal of the game.

NTDP alum Nick Pastujov (2014-16) added a goal for the Wolverines at 11:09 of the third period. Fellow NTDP alum and brother, Michael Pastujov (2015-17) added the assist.

Team USA’s Drew DeRidder tallied 21 saves on the night while Michigan’s Lavigne finished with 27 saves.

The 3,715 fans made Saturday’s game the largest ever for a NTDP home game.

The U18s are back in action Saturday, Dec. 9 at USA Hockey Arena as they host the Central Illinois Flying Aces.
