61 NTDP Alums Make Opening Night Rosters

Watch for these NTDP alumni in tonight’s NHL season openers

With the NHL’s opening night tonight, below is the breakdown of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program’s alumni who are on each NHL team’s opening night roster.

Eleven alumni are making an opening night roster for the first time including: Christian Fishcer (2013-15), Clayton Keller (2014-16), Anders Bjork (2012-14), Charlie McAvoy (2013-15), John Hayden (2011-13), J.T. Compher (2011-13), Sonny Milano (2012-14), Will Butcher (2011-13), Stephen Santini (2011-13), Tage Thompson (2014-16) and Andrew Copp (2010-12). The NTDP has 61 alumni total on NHL rosters currently.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have the most NTDP alumni with six, followed by the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks with five.

NTDP alumni Ian Cole (2005-07), Phil Kessel (2003-05), Bryan Rust (2008-10) and Matt Hunwick (2001-03) will start their season with the Penguins tonight after its banner raising ceremony and face-off against Tage Thompson (2014-15) and the St. Louis Blues.

Auston Matthews (2013-15), James van Riemsdyk (2005-07), Connor Carrick (2010-12), and Ron Hainsey (1997-99) of the Toronto Maples Leafs will open its season against Andrew Copp (2010-12), Jacob Trouba (2010-12) and the rest of the Winnipeg Jets.

Matthew Tkachuk (2013-15) will be the lone alum when his Calgary Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers tonight and Kevin Leblanc (2011-13) will be the NTDP representative in San Jose’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.  

The remaining alumni will open their seasons later this week.

Last season 85 NTDP alums appeared in at least one NHL game.
