The U.S. National Under-17 Team started its season off hot Friday night at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. defeating the Minnesota Wilderness of the NAHL 12-1 in a pre-season match-up.
Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) got the first goal of the U17s season, putting the puck in at 6:05 of the first period.
At 7:11 of the first the Wilderness tied the game at one.
Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) took back the lead for the Under-17 team after cleaning up his own rebound at 9:47 of the first period. Boldy picked up his second point of the night with the primary assist.
Boldy tallied his second goal of the period at 10:47 of the first frame.
Alex Vlasic (Wilmette, Ill.) got his first goal of the game after putting home a big rebound given up off Jack Hughes’ (Orlando, Fla.) shot from the right circle.
Just 45 seconds into the second frame Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) put the U17s up, 5-1 after the puck slid in off the post.
Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y), Patrick Moynihan (Millis, Mass.) and Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) also put up tallies, sending the U17s to the dressing room up 8-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Lindmark, Vlasic and Moynihan all added their second goals at 6:52, 9:08 and 17:22 respectfully, while John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) tallied his first at 14:58 of the third period.
The U17s goaltenders split time between the pipes with Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) and Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) both recording seven saves.
The U17s are on the road next weekend, Sept. 22 and 23 for the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn. They are back at USA Hockey Arena on Oct. 21 against the Green Bay Gamblers.
