Hughes looks to solidify a spot on final USA World Junior Championship roster before move to U of M

Quinn Hughes is no stranger to international play. Competing in multiple tournaments with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program over the past two seasons has left him well prepared. Upon his return back to USA Hockey Arena for the World Junior Summer Showcase, Hughes believes his experiences will be an advantage for his game.

“It definitely helps just so you know what you’re going into and what to expect so you’re not caught off guard.” said Hughes.

Catching up with many of his former teammates from the NTDP has also been a treat for Hughes. The Orlando, Fla. native has set his sights on making the final roster to compete in the World Junior Championship in December held in Buffalo, N.Y.

“That’s what I’m striving for, I think it would be an awesome goal to reach,” said Hughes. “Hopefully that happens for me.”

The chance to represent his country again would mean a lot to him. Hughes said he prides himself in putting on the USA crest and competing against other countries.

His successes with the NTDP have led him to a chance at playing hockey at the next level with the University of Michigan this fall. While a change in team is in his future, his summer workout routines have not changed.

“I think what I’ve been doing the last couple summers has helped me in the season,” said Hughes. “I’m just sticking to that routine and hopefully I will have another good year.”

Hughes said he is most excited about competing to win a title next year with the Wolverines.  The Big Ten is a competitive conference and he is looking forward to the rivalries that come with it. Helping his team win games such as those is a goal he has for himself, as well as being a good teammate.

“There’s a lot of good players at Michigan,” he said. “They’ll really help my offensive game and I think I can help theirs too.”
