NTDP Notebook Week of April 3-9

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is set to end the season in Youngstown, Ohio, against the Phantoms on Friday (April 7) and Saturday (April 8) at 7:05 p.m. ET at Covelli Centre. The U.S. National Under-18 Team has completed its United States Hockey League schedule and begins preparation for the IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship in Poprad and Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia.

Last Friday and Saturday, the U17s dropped a pair of games to the Fargo Force at Scheels Arena. Keegan Karki (Sartell, Minn.) recorded 58 saves on Friday night while Jake Goldowski (Thornhurst, Pa.) found the back of the net in the 5-1 loss. With that goal, Goldowski notched his 10th goal of the season.

In Saturday game, Jon Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) recorded 42 saves on 47 shots between the pipes for Team USA. Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.) tallied the lone goal on a power play in the second period as the U.S. fell, 5-1. 

The U18s concluded the 2016-17 USHL schedule with a 3-2 shootout win against Muskegon at L.C. Walker Arena on Saturday. Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) opened up the scoring for Team USA with nine seconds left in the first before Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) gave the U18s the lead 2-1 in the second period. After regulation and overtime, the cross-state rivalry matchup was not settled. The U18s started the shootout rounds with a goal from Wahlstrom followed by the game winner from Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) to seal the 3-2 victory for Team USA. Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) stopped both shots he faced in the shootout.

BLOCKING THE PHANTOMS: The U17s look to block out the Phantoms in their final two game series of the 2016-2017 campaign. The U17s have faced Youngstown twice during the season, with Youngstown taking the first game back on September 30 at USA Hockey Arena, 6-1. The U17s opened up the New Year with a 1-0 victory on January 7 at USA Hockey Arena.

Youngstown sits at 32-20-5-1 on the season.

Nicolas Werbik is leading the Phantoms recording (17-20-37) in 52 games. Ivan Kulbakov has been their main goaltender between the pipes recording (28-16-4-1) with a 1.97 goals-against-average, ranking him second in the USHL behind Matiss Kivlenieks of the Sioux City Musketeers.

FROZEN FOUR: The NCAA Men’s Frozen Four will have a distinct American presence again with 88 of the 110 players on the rosters of Harvard University, University of Denver, University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Notre Dame having developed their game within the United States prior to attending college. Thirteen players spanning all four teams are former members of the NTDP.

ALUM RECORD: Monday night, Auston Matthews (2013-15/Toronto Maple Leafs) broke Neal Broten’s record of most goals by an American rookie in the National Hockey League with his 39th goal of the season.

WHITE MAKES NHL DEBUT: Colin White (2013-15/Ottawa Senators) made his NHL debut Monday night (April 3) against the Detroit Red Wings recording 7:19 of on-ice time. White played three games for the Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut, recording a goal and two assists for three points.

COLLINS JOINS BLUE JACKETS: Ryan Collins (2012-14/Columbus Blue Jackets) recently signed a three-year entry-level contract with Columbus on Wednesday (April 5). The defensemen was drafted 47th overall in 2014 by the Blue Jackets. Collins will join the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League.
