U17s Claim Four Nations Championship; Fall to Switzerland in Shootout

MONTHEY, Switzerland  Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) tallied two goals for the U.S. National Under-17 Team in their 4-3 shootout loss to the tournament host, Switzerland, on Sunday afternoon at Monthey Arena.

Despite the loss, Team USA claimed the 2016 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament championship with a record of 2-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in the tournament. Team USA’s seven points are two more than any other team in the tournament.

Farabee opened the scoring for Team USA late in the first period at the 19:09 mark. Jake Wise (North Andover, Mass.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) picked up assists on the play.

Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) doubled the U.S. lead at the 6:39 mark of the second period off when he buried a wrist shot while falling through multiple defenders between the circles. Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.) picked up the assist on the play.

Team USA went up 3-0 under two minutes later when Farabee added his second of the game off a sharp-angle one-time shot from the goal line. Wahlstrom and Wise each added their second assists of the game on the play.

Team Switzerland responded with two goals in the final half of the second period to bring the score to 3-2 after two periods of play.

Switzerland tied the game with a little over five minutes remaining in the third period on a power play opportunity to force overtime.

Following a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout where Davyd Barandun won the game for Switzerland in the fifth round.

U.S. netminder Ryan Ullan (Hibbing, Minn.) stopped 24 shots in the loss while Switzerland goaltender Akira Schmid made 35 saves.
