Six different U.S. players scored and goaltender Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) made 23 stops to lead the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a 6-3 victory against the University of St. Thomas here tonight at USA Hockey Arena.
At 6:28, St. Thomas' Cullen Willox initially scored on a rebound, but the referees ruled that the puck was directed in with a kick and the game remained scoreless. About ten minutes later, however, Brian Leblanc was able to finish a loose puck to make it 1-0 for the Tommies.
With 2:59 on the clock in the first, David Farrance (Victor, N.Y.) sent a feed to Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.), who tapped the puck into the net in-stride at the right post.
St. Thomas scored a goal in the opening :23 of the second frame to regain a one-goal lead.
Tommy Miller (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tied the game minutes later when he found himself alone in front of the Tommies net and cut around goaltender Devin Tappenden.
Team USA earned its first lead of the night as Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) dove at a loose puck off an attempt by Nate Knoepke (Farmington, Minn.) at 11:02.
Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) extended the U.S. advantage to 4-2 just 1:48 into the third period after slamming home a one-timer from Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.).
Graham Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) and Reedy both added goals in the final ten minutes of the game before St. Thomas scored with :11 remaining to account for the 6-3 final.
