PLYMOUTH, Mich.- The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Sweden, 2-1, Wednesday night in their second game of the 2016 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.
With the loss, the U.S. falls to 1-1-0 in the tournament and is now fourth in the standings after two days. Team USA has a break in action tomorrow and will face the Czech Republic on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena.
After a hooking call against Team USA, Sweden took the lead late in the first period when a penalty shot was awarded to Anton Johansson, who buried it past U18s goaltender Dylan St. Cyr. (Northville, Mich.).
Jacob Tortora (Victory, N.Y.) registered the lone U.S. goal at the 5:12 mark of the second period. He now leads the tournament in goals with three over two games.
Graham Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) and Logan Cockerill (Brighton, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal.
Sweden regained the lead with just less than four minutes to play with a goal from Emil Bemstrom.
St. Cyr stopped 12 shots while Team Sweden goaltender Adam Ahman turned away 39 shots.
Czech Republic defeated Switzerland 5-3 in the first game of the day. Ondre Machala started the scoring at 8:55 in the 1st period off a power play goal.
The scoring opened up in the 2nd period, with Nando Eggenberger and Jan Petrig each netting one for Switzerland. Petrig’s goal was short handed, and Sven Leuenberger tallied the assist on both goals. Czech defenseman Dalimil Mikyska also scored a short-handed goal in the 2nd period.
Machala’s second goal came in the third period off a pass behind the net dished by Jáchym Kondelik – his second assist. Kondelik later scored, along with Martin Kaut. The final goal of the game came from Switzerland’s Lucas Matewa with 30 seconds left in the game. Swiss goalie Joakim Da Silva had a busy afternoon, saving 42 shots.
