Norris, Tortora Score Shorthanded Goals for the U.S.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team scored two shorthanded breakaway goals but couldn't overcome the Boston University Terriers as Team USA fell, 8-2, here tonight at Agganis Arena.

The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first period with goals from Patrick Harper, Patrick Curry and Bobo Carpenter. NTDP alumni Clayton Keller (2014-16) and Chad Krys (2014-16) added assists on the first and second goals, respectively.

Boston University had a power-play opportunity late in the opening frame when the U.S. was whistled for tripping. During the penalty kill, Graham Slaggert (Sound Bend, Ind.) and Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich.) took off on a two-man breakaway. Slaggert slid the puck to Norris, who beat goaltender Jake Oettinger (NTDP 2014-16) with nine seconds on the clock to make it 3-1.

The Terriers added a pair of goals in the opening 1:19 of the second period, including a power-play marker and a shorthanded goal. Keller and fellow NTDP alum Jordan Greenway (2013-15) connected for the shorthanded tally.

Harper's third of the night extended the Terriers' lead to 6-1.

With 1:37 on the clock in the second period, Jacob Tortora (Victor, N.Y.) added Team USA's second shorthanded goal of the night. He intercepted a pass at the blue line, skated into Boston University's zone and beat a sprawled Connor LaCouvee, who took the net midway through the period.

The Terriers added two more goals in the third period to account for the 8-2 final.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will continue NCAA Division-I competition when it faces Harvard University at 7 p.m. ET Saturday (Oct. 8) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Boston.
