Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) scored the lone goal for the U.S. National Under-17 Team as the team fell to the Youngstown Phantoms, 7-1, here tonight at USA Hockey Arena.
Youngstown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with markers at 7:51 and 14:04, including a power-play goal to open the scoring.
Eighteen seconds into the second frame, Youngstown's Brett Murray put home a rebound. Two more goals in a 1:12 span made it 5-0 in favor of the Phantoms. A pair of additional tallies in the second period put Team USA at a 7-0 deficit heading into the last period.
At 3:15 of the third period, Gruden connected on a pass from Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y) and put home the puck to put Team USA on the board.
The Under-17 Team will continue United States Hockey League competition next weekend with a two-game home stand against the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Buccaneers will travel to USA Hockey Arena for 7 p.m. ET puck drops on Friday (Oct. 7) and Saturday (Oct. 8).
