Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) scored the lone goal for Team USA as the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Youngstown Phantoms, 6-1, here tonight at USA Hockey Arena. The game marked the first United States Hockey League loss for the U17s.
At 13:13, the Phantoms opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal by Marcus Joseph. Youngstown added two more markers at 10:45 and 18:43 to put Team USA at a 3-0 deficit heading into the second period.
The U.S. successfully killed off a Phantoms penalty midway through the period, but Youngstown responded seconds later to extend its lead.
Samuelsson buried a rebound off a shot from Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) at 14:52 to put Team USA on the board. A goal by Youngstown's Austin Pooley made it 5-1 to close out the second frame.
Coale Norris scored the only goal of the third period to account for the 6-1 final.
