K’Andre Miller (Hopkins, Minn.) tallied a pair of goals and Jake Goldowski (Thornhurst, Pa.) scored once, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 6-3, in a preseason game at USA Hockey Arena.
Muskegon opened the scoring at 8:28 of the first period when Scooter Brickey scored with three seconds remaining on a U.S. penalty kill. Goldowski finished his own rebound off a play that started from Miller at the blue line to even the score with 6:05 remaining in the first period.
About midway through the second frame, Bobby Kaiser gave the Lumberjacks the lead, and Andrei Svechnikov extended it to 3-1 at 12:32.
With less than four minutes remaining in the period, Jake Wise (North Andover, Mass.) and Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) had a two-on-one opportunity. Wise skated along the right side and slid the puck to Farabee at the far post, but his attempt was denied.
At 18:22, Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) connected with Miller in the high slot, and he fired a wrister to cut the Team USA deficit to 3-2 heading into the final period.
Miller added his second of the night with a rocket from the top of the right circle to knot the game at 3-3.
The Lumberjacks added two goals in a 26-second span, including a power-play marker at 8:00, to give Muskegon a 5-3 lead. Anthony Del Gaizo scored with 2:22 remaining to account for the 6-3 final.
Goaltender Keegan Karki (Sartell, Minn.) made 27 stops in the loss.
Team USA and the Lumberjacks will complete the home-and-home series at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow (Sat., Sept. 10) at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon, Michigan.
