The U.S. National Under-17 Team will be in action this week at USA Hockey Arena while the Under-18 Team has a bye week.
THREE IN SEVEN: Coming off a third-place finish at the 2016 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament, the U17s have another busy week with three contests in seven days. The U17s host the North American Hockey League's Team Central at 7:30 p.m. Monday and the NAHL Selects 5 p.m. Tuesday. They also host the Muskegon Lumberjacks on at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The U17s posted a 2-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record at the Five Nations, which they hosted at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
They opened with a 4-3 overtime loss against the Czech Republic on Feb. 9. Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich.), Jacob Tortora (Victory, N.Y.) and Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) scored the goals. Goalies Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) and Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) combined for 14 stops.
Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the team to a 5-2 victory over Finland on Feb. 10. Brady Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.), Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) and David Farrance (Victory, N.Y.) also scored, and St. Cyr kicked out 34 of 36 shots.
In a 5-2 win over Sweden on Feb. 12, Dhooge and Vanya Lodnia (Novia, Mich.) each tallied two goals while Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) had the other. St. Cyr finished with 19 saves.
Russia beat Team USA 5-3 in the finale on Feb. 13. Reilly Walsh (Andover, N.H.) had two goals and Farrance had one while St. Cyr stopped 18 shots.
“The atmosphere in the building was electric [for the game against Russia],” U17 coach Don Granato said. “It was a great night for our players, and it is something they will remember. We have made progress this year, and this experience will only help our team in the future.”
BREAK TIME: After a fourth-place finish at their Five Nations Tournament, the U18s are off until they play at Arizona State University on Feb. 27.
The U18s were 2-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) at their Five Nations Tournament.
They opened tournament play with a 3-0 loss to Russia on Feb. 11 as goalie Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) kicked out 20 shots. In a 3-2 shootout loss to Sweden on Feb. 12, Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) tallied both goals while Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) finished with 23 saves.
Will Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored on a penalty shot and Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) added two more goals in a 3-2 win over Finland on Feb. 13. Woll kicked out 30 of 32 shots.
Five different players — Patrick Khodorenko (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.), Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.), Pastujov and Bellows — scored in a 5-2 win over Czech Republic on Feb. 14 to close out the tournament. Oettinger earned the starting nod, finishing with 14 saves.
