Both Teams Play Their Five Nations Tournaments This Week

Both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 Teams face international competition this week in their respective Five Nations Tournaments. The U17s host theirs at USA Hockey Arena while the U18s play in Finland.

HOSTING IN PLYMOUTH: The 2016 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament, presented by Farmers Insurance, runs Feb. 9-13, at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. The tournament features the United States along with the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden.

Each team will skate in four games with points awarded for regulation wins (3), overtime wins (2) and overtime losses (1). The tournament champion is determined based on final standings.

The U17s open play Tuesday against the Czech Republic. They play Finland Wednesday, Sweden on Friday and end the event against Russia on Saturday. All of the U.S. games begin at 7 p.m.

“This is a great event for our fans,” U17 coach Don Granato said. “They will be able to see the U17s play against other players in their own age group. It’s always great to play against players in our own age group.

“One challenge will be playing four games in a five-day span against some very good competition. We are looking to play with consistency and focus on each shift.”

The U17s posted a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic in a pre-tournament tilt on Saturday. Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.), Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.), Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) and Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) scored the goals, while goalies Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) and Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) combined for 12 saves.

ACROSS THE POND: The U18s head to Rauma, Finland, for their 2016 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament, which runs from Feb. 11-14. The event features the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Switzerland and the United States.

The U18s open tournament play against Russia on Thursday, before playing Sweden on Friday, Finland on Saturday and the Czech Republic on Sunday. Team USA defeated Finland in a pre-tournament game, 3-2, today.
