U17s Host Five Nations Tune-up this Week while U18s are Off

In a reverse from last week, the U.S. National Under-17 Team will play a single game this week while the U18s have a bye as both teams begin preparation for international play.

FIVE NATIONS PREP: The U17s continue their final preparations for the 2016 Five Nations Tournament, which runs Feb. 9-13 at USA Hockey Arena. Joining Team USA are the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden.

The U17s host the Czech Republic in a pre-tournament game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

“We are looking forward to a good week of practice as we are excited to host the Five Nations Tournament,” U17 coach Don Granato said. “It’s always nice to go back and play against our own age group. We are looking to play with consistency and focus and to give 100 percent on each shift.”

The U17s haven’t played a game since Jan. 23.

PRACTICE WEEK: The U18s will get four days of practice at USA Hockey Arena before heading to Rauma, Finland, for the U18 Five Nations Tournament, which runs Feb. 11-14. Prior to the tournament, the U18s play a pre-tournament game against host Finland on Monday, Feb. 8.

“This trip is another good measuring stick for our players,” U18 coach Danton Cole said. “It will be good to see where we are as a team; we want to see the guys play the right way and compete on both sides of the puck.”

The U18s swept a two-game set with Green Bay over the weekend, posting a 4-3 overtime win on Friday and a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) scored two goals, including the overtime winner, on Friday. Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) also scored twice in the win, while goalie Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) kicked out 26 shots.

Bellows scored two more goals, including another game winner, on Saturday. Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) recorded the other goal. Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with 19 stops between the pipes.
