• Former National Team Development Program and current Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Ron Hainsey (Bolton, Conn./1997-99) played in his 800th NHL game on Jan. 15. He has played in more NHL games than any NTDP alum.
• Former NTDP coach John Hynes (2003-09) was named an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. The World Cup is an eight-team tournament that begins Sept. 17 and runs until Oct. 1 in Toronto.
• Two former NTDP players were involved in NHL trades this past week. Defenseman Jared Tinordi (Millersville, Md./2008-10) went from the Montreal Canadiens to the Phoenix Coyotes. Meanwhile, defenseman Adam Clendening (Niagara Falls, N.Y./2008-10) is headed to the Anaheim Ducks after being dealt by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
• Boston University defenseman Matt Grzelcyk (Charlestown, Mass./2010-12) was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Jan. 11. Grzelcyk, BU’s captain, scored four goals, including his fist career hat trick, against UMass.
• Boston College forward Colin White (Hanover, Mass./2013-15) earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors after scoring three goals and picking up an assist in a win over Providence College.
• Forwards J.T. Compher (Northbrook, Ill./2011-13) and Luke Kunin (Chesterfield, Mo./2013-15) were named Big Ten Conference First and Third Stars, respectively, on Jan. 12. Compher tallied two goals and recorded seven points in Michigan’s two-game sweep of Michigan State. Kunin tallied one goal and collected four points in the University of Wisconsin’s win over Ohio State on Jan. 9.
• University of Denver defenseman Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./2011-13) was selected as the National Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 4-10. Butcher scored two goals and blocked six shots in DU’s two-game sweep at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
• The U18s will see some familiar faces this week. Michigan’s roster has six former NTDP players: Evan Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich./2011-13), Nicholas Boka (Plymouth, Mich./2013-15), J.T. Compher, Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich./2011-13), Brendan Warren (Carleton, Mich./2013-15) and Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe, Mich./2013-14). MSU’s roster has two former players in forward Dylan Pavelek (Marysville, Mich./2012-14) and goaltender Edwin Minney (Wind Gap, Pa./2012-14).
• U18 coach Danton Cole and U18 assistant coach Chris Luongo were both four-year letterwinners at MSU from 1985-89, helping MSU capture the 1986 NCAA Division I national title. During his career, Cole earned the 1989 Big Ten Medal of Honor and was a three-time member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team. Luongo was team captain as a senior (1988-89) and alternate captain as a junior (1987-88).
• U18 intern coach Tyler Walsh also has a connection to MSU. His younger brother Travis is a senior defenseman on the team. Walsh is the grandson of former MSU coach and athletic director Ron Mason, who coached both Cole and Luongo. Tyler Walsh is the son of the late Shawn Walsh, who guided the University of Maine to two national championships.
• The U18s carry a 25-7-1-1 (W-L-OTL-T) mark into this week’s action.
• Clayton Keller (23-45) continues to pace the U18s with 68 points in 34 games. Kieffer Bellows (27-19) is second with 46 points, while Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y./6-31) is third with 37 points. Joey Anderson (15-15) and Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo./14-14) round out the top five with 30 and 28 points, respectively.
• Jake Oettinger and Joseph Woll split time in net for the U18s. Oettinger is 16-5 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Woll is 10-2-2-1 with a 2.08 GAA and a .923 save percentage.
• The U17s carry a 13-17-4 (W-L-OTL) overall record into this week.
• Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn./14-25) leads the U17s with 39 points in 34 games. Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa./11-19) ranks second with 30 points, while Grant Mismash (15-14) is third with 29 points. Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich./11-12) sits fourth with 23 points and Jacob Tortora (Victor, N.Y./12-10) is fifth with 22 points.
• In goal for the U17s, Dylan St. Cyr and Adam Scheel split time. St. Cyr is 8-10-2 with a 3.76 GAA and an .877 save percentage. Scheel is 5-7-2 with a 4.24 GAA and an .883 save percentage.
