Both Teams Played Three Games Last Week with Two Coming Up

Both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 Teams will hit the road this week. The U17s play a pair of United States Hockey League foes in Iowa, while the U18s play two road games: one USHL contest and one college contest.

OUT TO IOWA: The U17s play at Des Moines on Friday before traveling to Cedar Rapids for a Saturday showdown.

The squad beat Muskegon 7-4 last Wednesday before dropping back-to-back games at Dubuque, losing 3-0 on Friday and 6-4 on Saturday.

The team scored six unanswered goals in a come-from-behind win over Muskegon. Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) had four of them, while Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) added the others. Reedy also scored in the second period to get Team USA on the board. Goalie Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) finished with 30 saves.

Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) kicked out 46 of 49 shots in game one against Dubuque. In the second game, Josh Maniscalco (Perkiomenville, Pa.), Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.), David Farrance (Victor, N.Y.) and Mismash tallied the goals. St. Cyr and Scheel combined for 19 saves.

“We are definitely playing shorthanded right now as we have several players out injured,” U17 coach Don Granato said. “I was proud of our team’s effort, especially earning a huge come-from-behind win against Muskegon and the squad’s ability to keep coming back against Dubuque in game two, even though we fell just short.

“We will continue to work in practice this week and get ready to head back out to Iowa for two tough USHL opponents.”

ROAD TRIP: The U18s are back on the road to face the Sioux Falls Stampede in USHL play on Friday before playing at the University of North Dakota on Saturday.

The U18s are coming off two wins and an overtime loss last week. They beat Chicago 5-2 on Tuesday and St. Cloud State University 7-6 on Sunday, with a 4-3 overtime loss to the University of Minnesota Duluth in the middle on Saturday.

Against Chicago, Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) paced the offense with two goals while Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) finished with 21 saves to earn the win. Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo.), Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) and Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) also tallied goals.

Fox, Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) and Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) scored against UMD. Goalie Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) had 40 saves.

Overtime was successful the next night when Anderson scored two goals, including the game-winner just 22 seconds into the extra session, at St. Cloud State. Frederic also added two markers while Bellows, Keller and Patrick Khodorenko (Walnut Creek, Calif.) had single goals. Oettinger finished with 29 saves.
